Best Finance Pioneers Green Savings Scheme, Reinforcing Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Rohan PoudelBy Rohan Poudel

Best Finance Company Limited has taken a significant stride towards environmental stewardship and sustainable financial practices with the launch of its innovative 'Green Savings' deposit scheme. This initiative is a direct response to the Nepal Rastra Bank’s forward-thinking Nepal Green Finance Taxonomy, 2024, underscoring the company's commitment to integrating ecological responsibility with its core business operations. The scheme is designed not only to attract depositors but also to actively contribute to environmental sustainability, with a unique pledge to plant one tree for every new account holder.

Demonstrating immediate action and tangible impact, Best Finance recently spearheaded a large-scale tree plantation program. In a collaborative effort with the Mahat Gaun Sallaghari Community Forest Users Committee and with crucial support from the Lalitpur District Forest Office, the company successfully planted 600 saplings. This extensive drive took place across Sectors A, B, and C of the community forest in Godawari Municipality-5, Lalitpur. The initiative saw robust participation from over 120 individuals, including dedicated officials and employees from Best Finance, government forest officials, local community representatives, students, and active members of the community forest users and local residents. This broad engagement highlights the community-centric approach of the program, fostering a shared sense of ownership and responsibility.

A critical aspect of this environmental commitment is the long-term sustainability plan for the newly planted trees. The Mahat Gaun Sallaghari Community Forest Users Committee has taken on the vital responsibility for the maintenance, protection, and comprehensive management of these saplings for a minimum period of five years. This commitment includes the crucial provision for replacing any trees that may not survive, ensuring a high success rate for the plantation effort. Such a structured approach guarantees that the environmental benefits of the initiative will be realized over the long term, contributing meaningfully to local biodiversity and ecological balance.

The introduction of the 'Green Savings' scheme by Best Finance is particularly noteworthy given its alignment with the Nepal Rastra Bank’s Nepal Green Finance Taxonomy, 2024. This regulatory framework is a pivotal step by the central bank to guide financial institutions towards environmentally sustainable investments and practices. By offering a product that directly supports green initiatives, Best Finance is not only complying with but actively championing the central bank's vision for a greener financial sector. This move positions the company as a leader in adopting progressive financial models that address pressing environmental concerns, setting a precedent for other financial institutions in Nepal to follow suit.

For investors, this initiative signals Best Finance’s proactive approach to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. In an era where corporate social responsibility is increasingly scrutinized by global and local investors, a commitment to environmental sustainability can significantly enhance a company's brand reputation and long-term value proposition. The 'Green Savings' scheme is expected to yield multiple environmental benefits, including enhanced biodiversity conservation, increased carbon absorption, improved watershed protection, and a tangible contribution to climate-change mitigation efforts. Ultimately, it embodies the powerful concept of “One Savings, One Tree, Green Future,” linking individual financial decisions directly to collective environmental well-being. This strategic move not only diversifies Best Finance's product offerings but also reinforces its dedication to fostering a sustainable future for Nepal.
