Divyashwori Hydropower Returns to Profitability in Q4 FY 2082/83, Driven by Strong Revenue Growth and Cost Management
Divyashwori Hydropower Limited (DHPL) has announced a significant turnaround in its financial performance, reporting a net profit for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2082/83. This marks a notable recovery for the company, which had been operating at a loss in the preceding fiscal year. The unaudited financial statements reveal a robust improvement driven by increased electricity sales revenue and effective cost management strategies.
For the fiscal year ending Ashar 2083, DHPL successfully posted a net profit of NPR 14.55 million. This is a remarkable achievement compared to the NPR 6.86 million loss recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal year. This positive shift underscores the company's efforts to optimize its operations and enhance its revenue streams.
A primary driver of this impressive performance is the substantial growth in electricity sales revenue. During the review period, DHPL's revenue from power sales surged by 16.11%, reaching NPR 104.4 million. This increase in top-line revenue directly contributed to the improved profitability. Concurrently, the company's operating profit also witnessed a significant boost, climbing by 38.26% to NPR 55.06 million. This indicates improved operational efficiency and a healthier core business performance.
Beyond revenue growth, a critical factor in DHPL's return to profitability was the prudent management of its financial expenses. The company successfully reduced its financial costs from NPR 46.1 million in the previous fiscal year to NPR 39.9 million in the current period. This reduction in interest and other financial charges played a pivotal role in bolstering the net profit figure, demonstrating effective financial stewardship.
The positive financial results have had a cascading effect on the company's balance sheet. DHPL's accumulated losses have shown a welcome decline, shrinking from NPR 256.4 million in the previous year to NPR 241.8 million. This reduction in accumulated deficit has, in turn, led to an improvement in the company's total equity, which has grown from NPR 7.56 million to NPR 22.1 million. While the company's paid-up capital remains at NPR 264 million, the strengthening of its equity base is a positive signal for investors, indicating a healthier financial foundation.
However, the financial statement also provides a comprehensive view of the company's ongoing challenges and capital structure. DHPL's long-term debt has seen an increase, rising from NPR 528 million in the previous fiscal year to NPR 573.4 million. The total assets of the company stand at NPR 754.2 million, reflecting its operational scale and investment in infrastructure.
The report also sheds light on some operational hurdles. The company has faced challenges related to low water flow in the river, which directly impacts electricity generation. Furthermore, past issues with the capacity of the 33 KV transmission line have previously led to reduced production and subsequently affected income. These operational constraints have historically made it difficult for the company to meet its principal and interest payment obligations to banks on time, leading to additional penalty interest and increased expenses.
In addition to operational challenges, Divyashwori Hydropower is also navigating legal complexities. The company is currently involved in two pending lawsuits: one in the Kathmandu District Court concerning a dispute with a former project contractor, and another in the Patan High Court. The resolution of these legal matters will be crucial for the company's long-term stability and operational focus.
Despite these challenges, Divyashwori Hydropower's return to profitability in FY 2082/83 is a significant milestone. It demonstrates the company's resilience and its ability to improve financial performance through strategic revenue growth and cost control. Investors will likely view this turnaround positively, though continued monitoring of operational efficiency, debt management, and the resolution of legal disputes will be key to assessing the company's sustained growth trajectory. The focus on enhancing electricity sales and managing expenses effectively will be paramount for DHPL to build on this momentum in the upcoming fiscal periods.
