Leading Brokers Southkali and Kalash Secure NPR 3 Billion to Fuel Margin Trading Expansion

Rohan PoudelBy Rohan Poudel

In a significant development poised to inject greater liquidity and dynamism into the Nepali capital market, two prominent stock brokerage firms, Southkali Investment & Securities Pvt. Ltd. (DISPL) and Kalash Stock Market Pvt. Ltd. (KSPL), have initiated plans to substantially expand their margin trading services. The two companies have collectively secured credit ratings for short-term loan facilities totaling an impressive NPR 3 billion, signaling a strategic move to diversify revenue streams and enhance investor opportunities.

Southkali Investment & Securities, a seasoned player with approximately 15 years of experience in the securities market, is preparing to secure a bank loan of NPR 2 billion (2,000 million). This proposed credit facility has been assigned a 'CARE-NP A3' rating by CARE Ratings Nepal, reflecting a sound financial standing and a strong capacity to meet its financial obligations. With a reported market share of 1.69% by the fiscal year 2082, Southkali aims to leverage this substantial funding to prioritize its margin trading facility. This initiative aligns with the Margin Trading Directive issued by the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON), enabling the company to provide credit to its clients for share purchases, thereby diversifying its income sources beyond traditional commissions.

Similarly, Kalash Stock Market, a relatively newer entrant that commenced operations in 2024 after its establishment in 2022, has rapidly carved out a strong presence in the market. KSPL has secured a 'CARE-NP A4+' rating from CARE Ratings Nepal for its proposed NPR 1 billion (1,000 million) loan facility. Kalash's strategy involves borrowing funds from banks at competitive interest rates and subsequently offering margin facilities to its clients at premium rates. The company has already secured approval from the stock exchange to commence its margin lending operations by June 2026, underscoring its proactive approach to market expansion and service innovation.

This surge in interest from brokerage firms towards margin trading is largely attributable to recent policy facilitations by the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) concerning margin lending, coupled with SEBON's comprehensive Margin Trading Directive. Historically, brokerage companies in Nepal primarily relied on commission income from trading activities. However, these new regulatory frameworks have opened avenues for brokers to generate interest income through margin trading, transforming their business models and fostering greater financial stability within the sector.

The NPR 3 billion in loan facilities will primarily be utilized by both Southkali and Kalash to bolster their Margin Trading Facilities (MTF) and manage their working capital requirements. This expansion is anticipated to have a positive ripple effect across the capital market, significantly enhancing market liquidity and providing individual investors with increased leverage and opportunities to participate more actively in the stock market. By offering more sophisticated financial products, these brokers are not only strengthening their own positions but also contributing to the overall maturity and professionalization of Nepal's financial landscape, ultimately benefiting a broader spectrum of investors seeking to capitalize on market movements.
