Nepal Telecom Elevates Connectivity: 4G Service Launched at 4,200m in Remote Badimalika

Nepal Telecom, the nation's leading telecommunications provider, has achieved a significant milestone by launching high-speed 4G services in the revered Badimalika region of Bajura district. Situated at an astounding altitude of approximately 4,200 meters above sea level, this remote area, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and profound religious significance, was previously beyond the reach of modern communication. The inauguration of this vital service on Monday marks a new era for thousands of pilgrims, tourists, and local residents who frequent the site, especially in anticipation of the upcoming Janai Purnima festival.

The launch was virtually officiated by Dr. Bikram Timilsina, the Minister of Communication and Information Technology, who connected directly via video call with the technical team stationed at the Lauri Binayak Tower site, located at 4,230 meters. During his address, Minister Timilsina underscored the government's unwavering commitment to ensuring that no citizen is deprived of communication services due to geographical remoteness. He declared the current fiscal year as the "Year of Telecommunication Improvement and Digital Transformation," expressing gratitude to Nepal Telecom's dedicated technicians for their arduous work in challenging terrains and to the Nepali Army for their crucial logistical support in transporting equipment.

The journey to establish communication services in Badimalika was fraught with formidable challenges. Following Minister Timilsina's directive on July 24, Nepal Telecom embarked on an expedited mission. With no road access to the high-altitude site, heavy tower equipment had to be airlifted by Nepali Army helicopters to Lauri Binayak. The technical team persevered through adverse weather conditions and the scarcity of oxygen inherent in high-altitude environments, completing the tower installation after nearly a month of relentless effort. This monumental undertaking exemplifies the dedication required to bridge Nepal's digital divide.

Sangeeta Pahadi, Managing Director of Nepal Telecom, reiterated the company's commitment to its social responsibility, prioritizing service delivery to citizens in remote areas over mere commercial profitability. "We are focused on building new infrastructure to bring the country's most remote regions into the communication mainstream," she stated, emphasizing the strategic importance of such projects for national development and inclusion. This initiative aligns with Nepal Telecom's broader vision of universal access and digital empowerment across the diverse landscapes of Nepal.

The introduction of mobile and internet services in the Badimalika area is expected to usher in a new dimension of safety, security coordination, and tourism promotion. Previously, the lack of communication posed significant hardships for pilgrims and trekkers, particularly during emergencies. According to Madhav Budhathoki, Assistant Technical Officer at Nepal Telecom, communication will now be seamless around the Badimalika Temple, Triveni area, and surrounding trekking routes, greatly enhancing the experience and safety of visitors. The successful installation was a collaborative effort, with engineers Sudarshan Acharya and Deepakraj Bhatta leading the dedicated team.

This project is part of a larger wave of digital revolution sweeping across Nepal's Himalayan regions. Beyond Badimalika, the government has been aggressively expanding 4G services to other remote areas. Recently, 4G services commenced in Jumla's historic Sinja region on August 21. Prior to this, high-altitude areas like Dunai and Tripurasundari in Dolpa, and Olangchungola in Taplejung, had already received these essential services. Nepal Telecom has identified additional communication-deprived areas nationwide and is moving forward with plans to construct 1,600 new towers. This ambitious expansion is poised to play a pivotal role in bridging the "digital gap" between Nepal's remote geographies and its urban centers, fostering inclusive growth and connectivity for all.
