Finance Minister Endorses Nepal-Made 'Yatri P2' Electric Scooter, Pledges Government Support for Local EV Manufacturing

Kathmandu, Nepal – In a significant boost for Nepal's burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) industry, Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle recently visited the manufacturing facility of Sipradi Yatri in Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu. The visit underscored the government's commitment to promoting indigenous innovation and manufacturing, particularly in the green energy sector. Dr. Wagle personally observed the production process of the 'Yatri P2', Nepal's first indigenously designed and manufactured electric scooter, offering words of encouragement and a firm pledge of government support to the pioneering venture.

During his visit, Minister Wagle lauded the diligent efforts of the Sipradi Yatri team, emphasizing the historic significance of designing and producing a two-wheeled electric vehicle within Nepal. "Your dedication is commendable. The fact that the Yatri P2 electric scooter is designed and manufactured right here in Nepal is a source of immense pride," Dr. Wagle stated. He urged the manufacturers to strive for world-class quality, enabling the Yatri P2 to compete effectively on the global stage. "Go forth with confidence; the government stands with you," he assured, highlighting the administration's readiness to facilitate their growth.

Drawing parallels with global tech giants, Dr. Wagle remarked, "Apple designs in California and produces in China. While you should aim to do as much as possible in Nepal, also consider strategies for global market expansion and competitiveness. Tell us what support the government can provide." He expressed profound respect for the hard work of Nepali engineers and designers, wishing for the scooter to not only conquer the local market but also to rival established international brands. The Minister even envisioned the Nepal-made scooter traversing American hills, expressing a hope that Nepalis living abroad would embrace the brand, making it a sought-after choice.

Asim Pandey, Founder and CEO of Yatri Electric Bike, provided the Finance Minister with a comprehensive overview of the Yatri P2. He detailed the intricate design process, rigorous safety checks, the components utilized, and the successful testing experiences. Pandey's vision, which began in 2017 after his engineering studies in the Netherlands, has now culminated in a strategic partnership with Sipradi Trading, one of Nepal's leading automotive distributors, forming 'Sipradi Yatri'.

Rajan Babu Shrestha, CEO of Sipradi Trading, echoed the sentiment of achieving a historic milestone. He highlighted that the in-house design and production of a two-wheeled vehicle, coupled with some unique, high-level features not found globally, represent a significant breakthrough for Nepal. The Yatri P2 has undergone successful testing across Nepal's challenging and complex hilly and Himalayan terrains, a testament to its robust engineering. Shrestha announced that the scooter is being prepared for public sale soon, although its specifics are currently being kept confidential.

A notable claim from the company officials is that the Yatri P2 is the world's first two-wheeled electric vehicle to be manufactured with a DC charger in Nepal, showcasing a leap in local technological capability. To ensure the competitiveness of this Nepali product in the market, CEO Shrestha appealed to the government for supportive policies, including concessions on electric batteries and raw materials for scooter components. Such measures, he argued, are crucial for fostering a thriving local manufacturing ecosystem and enabling Nepali products to stand strong against international competition. This initiative not only promises to reduce Nepal's reliance on imported vehicles but also to create new employment opportunities and contribute significantly to the national economy, aligning with the broader "Make in Nepal" vision.
