Gold Prices Soar by NPR 15,100 in a Week, Geopolitical Tensions in Strait of Hormuz Cited as Key Driver
The Nepali gold market witnessed a significant surge in prices over the past week, with the precious metal climbing by an astounding NPR 15,100 per tola. This sharp increase has pushed the price of gold to NPR 316,700 per tola by Friday, Bhadra 5 (August 21), up from NPR 301,600 recorded on Saturday, Saun 30 (August 15). This dramatic fluctuation underscores the sensitivity of the Nepali gold market to both international geopolitical events and domestic economic dynamics.
According to data from the Nepal Federation of Gold and Silver Dealers' Association, the week began with a notable rise. On Sunday, Saun 31 (August 16), gold prices increased by NPR 3,600, reaching NPR 305,200 per tola. The upward trend continued into Monday, Bhadra 1 (August 17), with an additional NPR 1,600 increment, bringing the price to NPR 306,600. Tuesday, Bhadra 2 (August 18), offered a brief respite as prices remained stable. However, Wednesday, Bhadra 3 (August 19), saw a slight dip of NPR 2,700, with gold trading at NPR 304,100 per tola. The most significant jump occurred on Thursday, Bhadra 4 (August 20), when prices soared by NPR 9,300 in a single day, reaching NPR 313,400. The week concluded with another substantial increase of NPR 3,300 on Friday, Bhadra 5 (August 21), culminating in the week's closing price of NPR 316,700 per tola.
Industry experts attribute this sharp escalation primarily to the ongoing geopolitical tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Tejaratna Shakya, former president of the Nepal Federation of Gold and Silver Dealers' Association, highlighted the critical role of the standoff between the United States and Iran over this vital waterway. "The deadlock in the Strait of Hormuz, particularly the tensions between the US and Iran, is a primary driver behind the sudden surge in gold prices," Shakya stated. He further elaborated that the perceived control of the Strait by the US, stemming from disagreements over potential agreements between Iran and Oman, has directly impacted the global gold market. The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial chokepoint for global oil shipments, and any instability there typically sends shockwaves through international commodity markets, prompting investors to flock to safe-haven assets like gold.
Beyond international factors, domestic economic conditions also play a role. Shakya noted that while international factors are dominant, the stagnant purchasing power of Nepali consumers has also contributed to the situation. When local demand for gold as a consumer good weakens, it can lead to an accumulation of gold reserves domestically or a shift in market dynamics, although the primary driver for such a sharp increase is almost always external. The global increase in gold's value, driven by international uncertainty, inherently translates to higher prices in local markets, irrespective of domestic demand for physical gold.
Further insights into the Nepali gold market come from the Customs Department's data for the first month of the current fiscal year (Shrawan). Nepal imported over NPR 1.02 billion worth of gold during Shrawan alone. This translates to a total of 50,000 grams, or 50 kilograms, of 'fine gold' entering the country. This significant import volume, despite the fluctuating prices, indicates a consistent underlying demand or strategic stocking by traders, potentially anticipating further price hikes or catering to seasonal demands. The outflow of approximately NPR 1.02 billion for gold imports highlights the substantial foreign exchange expenditure on this precious commodity, which has broader implications for Nepal's balance of payments.
For investors, the current gold price trajectory presents a complex scenario. While gold traditionally serves as a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty, its rapid appreciation can also signal heightened global risks. Nepali investors, often turning to gold during times of economic instability, must weigh the potential for further gains against the inherent volatility driven by unpredictable geopolitical events. The interplay of international supply chain disruptions, global economic sentiment, and domestic purchasing power will continue to shape the gold market in the coming months, making informed decision-making crucial for those looking to invest in this timeless asset.
