Nepal Falls Short of Ambitious Electricity Production Target, Adds 561 MW Amidst Challenges
Nepal's ambitious goal to significantly boost its electricity generation capacity has encountered a setback, with the government falling short of its target for the fiscal year 2082/083 (2025/2026 AD). The nation had aimed to add 942 megawatts (MW) to its national grid, pushing the total installed capacity to 4,800 MW. However, only approximately 59% of this target, or 561 MW, was successfully integrated into the national transmission line. This brings Nepal's total installed electricity capacity to around 4,300 MW.
According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the past fiscal year saw the completion and commencement of operations for 25 new power projects. These projects are crucial contributors to the national grid, with 23 being hydropower initiatives and two being solar power plants. This mixed portfolio underscores Nepal's commitment to diversifying its energy sources, although hydropower remains the dominant focus given the country's vast water resources.
The reasons behind the missed target are multifaceted, primarily stemming from a combination of natural calamities and logistical hurdles. The monsoon season proved particularly challenging, with devastating floods and landslides inflicting significant damage on ongoing construction sites. These natural disasters not only caused physical destruction but also led to considerable delays in project timelines, disrupting the pace of work across various sites.
Furthermore, managerial and supply chain inefficiencies played a critical role. The timely availability of essential construction materials such as cement and rebar was a persistent issue, slowing down progress. Damage to road networks, particularly in remote project areas, compounded these problems by creating severe transportation difficulties for heavy machinery and equipment. Such logistical bottlenecks are common in Nepal's rugged terrain but were exacerbated by the extreme weather conditions.
Despite not fully achieving the set target, the addition of 561 MW is still a substantial contribution to Nepal's energy sector. The largest among the 25 newly operational projects is the 102 MW Middle Bhotekoshi Hydropower Project, a significant undertaking that highlights the scale of private and public sector investment in the country's energy future. Other notable projects, ranging from small to medium scale, collectively strengthen the national grid and contribute to energy security.

Looking ahead, the focus must shift not only to increasing generation capacity but also to strengthening the transmission and distribution infrastructure. Without robust transmission lines, the generated electricity cannot be efficiently delivered to consumers or exported to neighboring countries. Enhanced infrastructure development will be crucial for maximizing the benefits of these new projects, facilitating greater domestic consumption, and unlocking the full potential for electricity exports.
