Nepal's Export Entrepreneurs Embark on Strategic Mission to Oman to Boost Trade and Market Access
Nepal's export sector is poised for a significant push into the Middle Eastern market, with a high-level delegation of Nepali export entrepreneurs recently embarking on a strategic four-day visit to Oman. This proactive initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nepali Embassy in Oman, aims to firmly establish Nepali products within the Omani market, foster trade expansion, and cultivate direct business-to-business (B2B) partnerships between the two nations.
The delegation, led by Mr. Govinda Prasad Ghimire, President of the Federation of Export Entrepreneurs Nepal, comprises a diverse group of fifteen prominent business leaders. Key members include Mr. Rabindra Shakya, President of the Nepal Handicraft Federation; Mr. Kiran Kumar Dangol, Vice President of the Federation and President of the Nepal Handmade Paper Association; Mr. Bikram Chemjong, President of the Nepal Water Industry Federation; Mr. Swayambhu Ratna Tuladhar, Advisor to the Federation; and Mr. Manoj Kumar Yadav, Vice President of the Nepal Dairy Association. Their collective presence underscores the broad spectrum of Nepali industries keen on tapping into Oman's burgeoning economy.
During their intensive four-day itinerary, the delegation is scheduled to engage in a series of high-impact activities designed to maximize market penetration and investment opportunities. These include crucial business interaction and networking events hosted at the Nepali Embassy in Oman, fostering direct connections with local stakeholders. A pivotal aspect of the visit involves discussions and potential agreements on bilateral trade cooperation and investment with the esteemed Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industries. Furthermore, a dedicated meeting with the Oman Investment Authority is planned to explore significant investment possibilities and avenues for commercial collaboration, signaling Nepal's intent to attract Omani capital and expertise.
Crucially, the delegation will conduct direct B2B meetings with the procurement departments of Oman's leading retail giants, such as Nesto Hypermarket, Lulu Hypermarket, and Hypermax. These interactions will facilitate direct product showcasing and market observation, providing invaluable insights into consumer preferences and supply chain requirements. Beyond formal engagements, the team will also interact with the Nepali diaspora and business community residing in Oman, leveraging their local knowledge and networks to further export promotion and investment expansion efforts. Mr. Bishesh Kumar Shah, First Secretary at the Nepali Embassy in Oman, highlighted the comprehensive nature of these programs, emphasizing their potential to create lasting economic ties.
Mr. Govinda Prasad Ghimire expressed strong optimism regarding the mission, stating his belief that this visit marks a pivotal step towards significantly expanding the footprint of Nepali products in the Omani market. He underscored Oman's strategic importance as a vital trade hub within the Gulf region, presenting immense potential for a wide array of Nepali goods. Specifically, he identified promising prospects for Nepali agricultural produce, including fresh vegetables and herbal products, alongside traditional handicrafts, handmade paper, processed food items, dairy products, natural beverages, and other value-added Nepali manufactured goods. The diverse nature of these products aligns well with Oman's growing consumer demand and its role as a re-export hub.
Despite the long-standing diplomatic relations between Nepal and Oman, bilateral trade has historically remained modest. Nepal's primary exports to Oman have traditionally included carpets, pashmina, handicrafts, tea, coffee, spices, handmade paper, and select agricultural products. Conversely, Oman's exports to Nepal largely consist of fertilizers, chemicals, and industrial raw materials. While the current trade balance does not favor Nepal, there has been a noticeable intensification of efforts in recent years to promote Nepali products across the broader Gulf market. This mission is a testament to that renewed focus. The strategic location of Oman also offers a significant advantage, potentially serving as a gateway for Nepali products to access other lucrative Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) markets, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait, thereby amplifying Nepal's regional trade presence. This concerted effort is expected to not only boost Nepal's export revenue but also diversify its trade partners, contributing to a more resilient national economy.
