Nepal Initiates Construction of Crucial 400kV Bajhang-Banlek Transmission Line to Boost Energy Evacuation

Nepal's ambitious journey towards becoming a regional energy powerhouse has taken a significant step forward with the National Transmission Grid Company Limited (NTGCL) officially commencing the process for the construction of the vital 400kV Bajhang-Banlek (West Seti) power transmission line. This monumental infrastructure project is designed to evacuate a substantial 2,500 megawatts (MW) of electricity, primarily from the burgeoning hydropower projects in Nepal's Far-Western Development Region, including the much-anticipated West Seti Hydropower Project.

The proposed transmission line will span approximately 60 kilometres, originating from the Chainpur Substation in Bajhang district and extending to Banlek in Shikhar Municipality-10, Doti district. This strategic routing is critical for connecting the remote yet resource-rich western parts of Nepal to the national grid, facilitating the seamless flow of green energy to consumption centers across the country and potentially for export to neighboring markets. The 400kV capacity signifies a high-voltage, high-capacity transmission corridor, essential for handling the large volumes of power expected from the region's numerous planned and under-construction hydropower facilities.

The initiation of this project underscores Nepal's commitment to strengthening its energy infrastructure, which is a cornerstone of its economic development strategy. The National Transmission Grid Company Limited, a key entity responsible for developing and managing the nation's high-voltage transmission network, has formally submitted its application to the Department of Electricity Development (DoED) for the necessary construction approval. This procedural step is mandated by Clause (4) of the Electricity Act, 2049, which governs the development and regulation of Nepal's electricity sector, ensuring adherence to legal and technical standards.

The DoED, in line with its regulatory responsibilities and commitment to transparency, has also issued a public notice inviting feedback and suggestions from all stakeholders, including local communities, environmental experts, and the general public. This consultative approach is crucial for addressing potential concerns, ensuring environmental sustainability, and fostering community buy-in, which are vital for the smooth execution of large-scale infrastructure projects. Public participation in such critical national endeavors helps in identifying and mitigating risks early on, leading to more robust and socially acceptable outcomes.

With an estimated completion timeline of five years from the commencement of construction, the Bajhang-Banlek transmission line is poised to unlock immense potential for the Far-Western region. Beyond evacuating power from projects like West Seti, it will also serve as a backbone for other smaller and medium-sized hydropower projects in the area, ensuring their viability and contribution to the national energy mix. This enhanced transmission capacity is not just about electricity; it's about fostering industrial growth, improving rural electrification, creating employment opportunities, and ultimately uplifting the socio-economic landscape of one of Nepal's less developed regions.
