Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari Assumes Senior Leadership Role in CPN (UML) Amidst Key Party Decisions

Kathmandu, Nepal – In a significant political development, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) has officially appointed former President Bidya Devi Bhandari as a senior leader of the party. Secretary Padma Aryal elaborated on the rationale behind this pivotal decision, stating that it was deemed inappropriate to keep such an esteemed personality without a formal responsibility after she had been granted party membership. Bhandari, who served two terms as Nepal's President from 2015 to 2023, had initially applied for party membership even before the CPN-UML's 11th general convention. At that time, the party had deliberated on the appropriateness of a former head of state re-entering open partisan politics, considering the dignified nature of the presidential office.

However, Bhandari asserted her right as a citizen to express her political affiliation and desire to be a party member. Recognizing this, the CPN-UML eventually granted her membership. Secretary Aryal emphasized that it was a natural progression to assign a significant role to such a respected figure once her membership was confirmed. "It would not have been appropriate to keep her merely as a pure party member," Aryal stated. "Therefore, when considering what responsibility would be suitable, taking into account her personality, her capacity, her guardianship, the party has now decided to give her a place and honor in this party as a respected senior leader." This move underscores the party's recognition of her extensive experience and influence within the political landscape.
