Khushbu Oli Demands High-Level Probe into Sunsari Shooting, Citing Rising Religious Intolerance

In a significant development highlighting growing socio-political concerns in Nepal, Ms. Khushbu Oli, Chief Whip of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), has vehemently criticized the government for what she perceives as a concerning rise in religious intolerance and communal tension across the nation. Speaking during a special session of the House of Representatives on Thursday, MP Oli urgently called for the establishment of a high-level commission to conduct an impartial and objective investigation into the recent Sunsari incident.

MP Oli accused the ruling parties of acknowledging the Sunsari incident as tragic and sensitive while simultaneously remaining silent on its true nature and underlying causes. She asserted that the government appears hesitant to openly acknowledge the facts surrounding the shooting incident during a Bolbam religious procession, which resulted in the death of Om Prakash Mehta and left dozens injured. Furthermore, she criticized the Prime Minister's remarks on the shooting, made via social media prior to a full investigation, as premature and ill-considered.

Her concerns extended to the Morang District Administration Office, which issued a notice regarding sound control during religious rituals. MP Oli expressed strong objection to this, arguing that such directives, seemingly targeting specific religions and scriptures, could foster resentment and reflect administrative immaturity. She emphasized that the Bolbam pilgrimage is an integral part of Nepal's rich religious and cultural heritage.

"Who fired the bullet, and under whose command?" questioned MP Oli, highlighting what she described as contradictions in the statements from the District Administration, the police, and the Prime Minister. She stressed the gravity of these inconsistencies, suggesting they undermine public trust and the rule of law. Oli further posited that Nepal, when it was a Hindu nation with a constitutional monarchy, was comparatively more tolerant and balanced than it is today. She urged that this perspective be reviewed not merely on emotion but through serious debate and evidence-based analysis.

MP Oli contended that religious conflict and intolerance have escalated since Nepal adopted secularism. She also raised alarm over external funding for religious conversions and the uncontrolled influx of Rohingya and Pakistani refugees, which she believes pose significant challenges to the nation's security. Citing concerns already voiced by high-ranking security officials, she demanded that the government address these sensitive issues with utmost seriousness.
