Nagdhunga Tunnel Opens to Small Private Vehicles in Trial Operation

The Nagdhunga Tunnel, a key gateway connecting Kathmandu with the western part of the country, has been opened to small and private vehicles from Monday as part of its phased trial operation. The project has started allowing cars, jeeps, and vans with seating capacity of up to nine passengers to use the tunnel during the initial phase of the trial operation. From 9 AM on Monday, ambulances, emergency service vehicles, government-registered vehicles, and small private vehicles began traveling through the tunnel between Kathmandu and Dhading. During the first phase, the tunnel will remain open from 9 AM to 6 PM. According to the project, vehicles will initially be managed in a one-way system depending on traffic conditions. However, heavy vehicles, trucks, and motorcycles have not yet been permitted to use the tunnel. The project is preparing to introduce two-way traffic within the next one or two days, depending on the condition of the tunnel and traffic management. The operating hours will also be gradually extended. In the second phase, the tunnel is expected to operate from 7 AM to 8 PM, while the third phase will extend operations from 6 AM to 10 PM. The operation of the Nagdhunga Tunnel is expected to provide motorists with an alternative to the winding Nagdhunga road and frequent traffic congestion. With the tunnel in operation, travelers are expected to reach or exit Kathmandu in around 10 minutes, helping reduce travel time and fuel consumption while making the journey faster and more convenient.
