Nepal Stock Exchange Continues Downtrend as Index and Turnover Decline for Third Consecutive Day
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) witnessed another challenging trading session on Thursday, extending its losing streak for the third consecutive day. The benchmark index closed significantly lower, reflecting a prevailing bearish sentiment among investors. This persistent decline has raised concerns within the market, prompting a closer look at the factors influencing investor behavior and overall market dynamics.
On Thursday, the NEPSE index shed a notable 16.29 points, settling at 2672.58. This downward movement was mirrored across other key indices as well. The Sensitive Index, which tracks the performance of 'A' class companies, decreased by 2.31 points. Similarly, the Float Index, representing freely tradable shares, dropped by 0.97 points, and the Sensitive Float Index saw a decline of 0.77 points. The broad-based nature of these declines indicates a widespread negative sentiment affecting various segments of the market.
Accompanying the fall in the index was a noticeable contraction in trading volume. The total turnover for the day amounted to NPR 3.38 billion, a significant decrease from the NPR 4.02 billion recorded on Wednesday. This decline in liquidity suggests that investors are either holding back from making new investments or are engaging in cautious profit-booking activities. A total of 7.548 million shares from 337 stocks changed hands across 44,651 transactions, highlighting a reduction in overall market participation compared to previous sessions.
Despite the broader market downturn, a few stocks managed to defy the trend. Everest Color Company notably continued its impressive run, trading at the positive circuit level for the ninth consecutive trading day. Its share price surged by NPR 148.50, closing at NPR 1,138.60, demonstrating strong investor confidence in the company. Conversely, Kalinchok Hydropower faced the steepest decline, with its share price plummeting by 14.99%. Corporate Development Bank also experienced a significant drop, losing over 12.5% of its value, indicating specific pressures on these individual stocks.
In terms of trading activity, Reliance Spinning Mills emerged as the top performer by turnover, recording transactions worth NPR 243.8 million. Corporate Development Bank, despite its share price decline, saw substantial trading volume with approximately NPR 155 million worth of shares changing hands. Ridi Power Company also attracted considerable investor interest, with its turnover exceeding NPR 105 million. These figures suggest concentrated trading in certain scrips even amidst a general market slowdown.
A comprehensive review of the sectoral performance revealed a universal decline, with all 13 sub-indices closing in the red. The Hydropower sector was hit hardest, experiencing the largest drop of 1.20%. The Development Bank sub-index also suffered a significant setback, falling by more than 1%. Other sub-indices recorded declines of less than 1%, but the widespread nature of the downturn across all sectors underscores the pervasive bearish mood currently gripping the NEPSE market. This broad-based weakness suggests that the current market correction is not confined to specific industries but is rather a systemic response to broader economic or sentiment-driven factors. Investors are advised to closely monitor these trends and consider their investment strategies in light of the ongoing market volatility.
