NEPSE Adjusts Share Prices for Global IME Bank and Nepal Lube Oil Following Bonus Share Announcements

Rohan PoudelBy Rohan Poudel

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) has officially adjusted the share prices of two prominent listed companies, Global IME Bank Limited (GBIME) and Nepal Lube Oil Limited (NLO), effective Friday, Ashoj 2 (corresponding to September 18th or 19th, depending on the exact calendar conversion). This crucial adjustment follows the companies' respective announcements of bonus shares, a common practice by profitable entities to reward shareholders and expand their capital base. The move by NEPSE ensures that the market accurately reflects the dilution effect of these bonus shares before the book closure date, which is set for September 21 (Ashoj 5) for both companies.

For investors, the book closure date is paramount as it determines eligibility for the announced dividends. Shareholders holding shares of GBIME and NLO in their demat accounts by the end of trading on the day prior to the book closure (i.e., Ashoj 4 or September 20) will be entitled to receive the bonus shares. After this date, shares traded will no longer carry the right to the announced dividends for the current fiscal year. This mechanism is vital for maintaining fairness and clarity in dividend distribution, ensuring that only eligible shareholders benefit from the announced rewards.

Global IME Bank, one of Nepal's largest and most influential commercial banks, announced a 4% bonus share. Prior to the adjustment, GBIME's shares closed at Rs. 260.90 per share. Following NEPSE's standard calculation methodology, the adjusted price for Global IME Bank has been set at Rs. 250.87. This adjustment is precisely calculated by dividing the pre-adjustment closing price by (1 + bonus share percentage), effectively reflecting the increased number of shares in circulation. In this specific instance, the calculation is Rs. 260.90 / (1 + 0.04) = Rs. 250.87, a precise reflection of the market's new valuation per share.

Similarly, Nepal Lube Oil, a key player in the industrial sector known for its lubricants and petroleum products, declared a more substantial 15% bonus share. Its shares had closed at Rs. 277.40 per share on the last trading day before the adjustment. Post-adjustment, Nepal Lube Oil's share price now stands at Rs. 241.22. The calculation here follows the exact same principle: Rs. 277.40 / (1 + 0.15) = Rs. 241.22, ensuring consistency and transparency across the market.

These adjustments are a standard and necessary procedure implemented by NEPSE to maintain market fairness, integrity, and transparency. When a company issues bonus shares, the total number of shares outstanding increases, which inherently dilutes the value of each individual share. The adjusted price reflects this dilution, ensuring that the market opens at a fair value on the next trading day. While the immediate effect is a noticeable drop in the per-share price, investors who hold onto their shares will receive additional shares, thereby maintaining their overall investment value in the company, assuming the company's underlying fundamentals and market capitalization remain strong. This process is crucial for preventing artificial price inflation or deflation due to dividend announcements and ensures a level playing field for all market participants.

The resumption of trading for both Global IME Bank and Nepal Lube Oil will occur at these newly adjusted prices in the secondary market on the next trading day. For investors, understanding these adjustments is crucial for making informed decisions, especially when considering buying or selling shares around dividend declaration and book closure dates. It underscores the importance of looking beyond just the nominal share price and considering the total value of one's holdings, including future bonus shares. This proactive move by NEPSE reinforces its commitment to fostering a well-regulated and transparent stock market environment in Nepal, which is essential for investor confidence and market growth.
