The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) brokerage industry demonstrated significant financial performance in the fiscal year 2082/83, with broker companies collectively earning a substantial NPR 6.89 billion (NPR 6,89,19,16,000) in commission income. This impressive figure was generated from a total share transaction volume of NPR 16.01 trillion (NPR 16,01,87,92,00,000) facilitated through brokers during the year. The commission rate, when compared to the total turnover, stood at approximately 0.43%, indicating a consistent revenue stream for the brokerage firms operating within the Nepalese capital market.

However, a closer look at the distribution of this commission income reveals a highly concentrated market structure. Out of the 94 brokers listed in NEPSE's annual statistics, the top 20 brokerage firms alone accounted for a dominant NPR 3.57 billion (NPR 3,57,42,47,000) in commission earnings. This represents a significant 51.86% of the total commission pool, underscoring the considerable market power wielded by a select group of players. The remaining 74 brokers collectively earned NPR 3.31 billion (NPR 3,31,76,69,000), comprising 48.14% of the total, highlighting a disparity in earning capabilities across the industry.

Further dissecting the market concentration, the top 10 brokers alone captured an even larger share, bringing in NPR 2.32 billion (NPR 2,32,04,30,000), which translates to 33.67% of the total annual commission. Leading this elite group was Nasa Securities Company, which emerged as the highest-earning broker for the year, securing an impressive NPR 471.84 million (NPR 47,18,40,844) in commissions. Following Nasa Securities were Vision Securities with NPR 258.65 million (NPR 25,86,50,831), Sani Securities with NPR 248.63 million (NPR 24,86,37,670), Imperial Securities with NPR 245.26 million (NPR 24,52,61,469), and Online Securities with NPR 222.32 million (NPR 22,23,20,555). Cumulatively, these top five brokers alone generated approximately NPR 1.44 billion in commission income, solidifying their dominant positions within the industry.

The trend of concentrated earnings continued into the first month of the new fiscal year 2083/84, Shrawan. During this period, broker companies collectively earned NPR 412.73 million (NPR 41,27,36,783) in commissions from a total share transaction volume of NPR 95.35 billion (NPR 95,35,33,90,000). The commission rate remained consistent at around 0.43% of the turnover. Nasa Securities once again led the pack in Shrawan, earning NPR 38.22 million (NPR 3,82,24,140) in commissions. Other top performers for the month included Sani Securities with NPR 14.03 million (NPR 1,40,38,000), Imperial Securities with NPR 13.24 million (NPR 1,32,48,000), and Vision Securities with NPR 13.21 million (NPR 1,32,14,000). The top 10 brokers in Shrawan collectively garnered NPR 143.12 million (NPR 14,31,24,000), representing 34.68% of the total commission earned by all brokers during the month.

These annual and monthly statistics clearly illustrate a significant concentration of broker commission income among a limited number of large brokerage firms in Nepal. This dominance by a few key players has several implications for the NEPSE market. For investors, it might mean varying levels of service quality and access, depending on which broker they choose. While larger brokers often have more resources for technology and research, smaller firms might struggle to compete, potentially leading to less innovation or diverse service offerings across the industry. From a regulatory perspective, this concentration warrants attention to ensure fair competition, market stability, and equitable access for all market participants. The consistent performance of top brokers like Nasa Securities highlights their established client base and operational efficiency, setting a benchmark for others in the competitive Nepalese brokerage landscape. The robust earnings reflect the active participation in the NEPSE market, despite fluctuations, and underscore the vital role brokers play in facilitating capital market transactions.
