NEPSE Extends Decline for Third Consecutive Day Amidst Shrinking Trading Volume
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) continued its downward trajectory on Wednesday, marking the third consecutive trading day of losses. This persistent decline has raised concerns among investors, particularly as the market's overall trading activity also showed a noticeable contraction, signaling a cautious sentiment pervading the Nepali financial landscape.
On Wednesday, the NEPSE index shed 7.79 points, closing at 2688.88. This dip follows similar negative movements in the preceding two trading sessions, indicating a broader bearish trend. The decline was not isolated to the main index; the Sensitive Index, which tracks large and actively traded companies, fell by 0.78 points. Similarly, the Float Index, representing free-float shares, decreased by 0.65 points, and the Sensitive Float Index saw a reduction of 0.42 points. These widespread declines across various indices underscore a broad-based weakness in the market.
Accompanying the index's fall was a significant reduction in trading volume, a key indicator of market liquidity and investor participation. On Tuesday, the market witnessed share transactions worth NPR 4.42 billion. However, on Wednesday, this figure dropped to NPR 4.0294 billion, with 9.77 million units of shares traded across 48,000 transactions involving 343 stocks. The consistent decrease in trading volume alongside the index's decline suggests that investors are either holding back from making new investments or are actively liquidating their positions, leading to reduced market depth and potentially higher volatility.
Despite the overall market's subdued performance, a few individual stocks managed to defy the trend, showcasing remarkable gains. Everest Color, for instance, continued its impressive run, trading at a positive circuit level for the eighth consecutive day. Its share price surged by NPR 129.10, closing at NPR 990.10. This exceptional performance could be attributed to specific company news, strong fundamentals, or speculative interest. Similarly, Kalinchok Hydropower saw its share price jump by approximately 12.5 percent. While other stocks also registered gains, their growth rates remained below 5 percent, highlighting the concentrated nature of positive momentum in a handful of scrips.
In terms of trading volume, Himalayan Power Partner emerged as the leader, recording transactions worth NPR 224.8 million. Khani Khola Hydropower followed closely with a trading volume exceeding NPR 210 million, while Reliance Spinning Mills saw shares worth approximately NPR 180 million change hands. The high trading volumes in these companies, particularly in the hydropower sector, suggest sustained investor interest or significant block deals, even amidst a broader market downturn.
The sector-wise performance painted a largely negative picture. Out of the 13 sub-indices, only two managed to register gains, namely the Mutual Fund and Other sub-indices, both showing only marginal increases. The remaining eleven sub-indices experienced declines, reflecting a broad-based retreat across most sectors. This widespread sectoral weakness indicates that the market's current challenges are not confined to a specific industry but are rather a systemic issue, potentially influenced by macroeconomic factors, interest rate expectations, or a general lack of positive catalysts.
Investors are advised to exercise caution and conduct thorough due diligence in the current market environment. The consecutive declines in NEPSE, coupled with shrinking trading volumes, suggest a period of uncertainty. Monitoring key economic indicators, corporate earnings reports, and regulatory developments will be crucial for navigating the market in the coming days. The market's ability to rebound will largely depend on renewed investor confidence and the emergence of positive market-driving news.
