NEPSE Extends Losing Streak to Five Days; Manufacturing Sector Shines Amidst Broader Market Decline

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) continued its downward trajectory for the fifth consecutive trading day, signaling a period of sustained caution among investors. On this trading session, the benchmark index recorded a marginal loss of 1.04 points, or 0.04%, to close at 2,557.31. This modest decline follows a more significant drop of 35.92 points in the preceding session, underscoring a cumulative weakening of market sentiment over the past week.

Opening at 2,553.99, the NEPSE index experienced notable intraday volatility, fluctuating between a high of 2,566.78 and a low of 2,517.79 before settling at its closing mark. This fluctuation indicates a persistent tug-of-war between buyers and sellers, with sellers ultimately gaining a slight edge by the end of the day. The total market turnover for the day amounted to Rs. 3.78 Arba, a figure that, while substantial, suggests a degree of profit-taking or strategic repositioning rather than strong, conviction-driven buying. A total of 10,626,370 shares were traded across 348 companies through 52,575 transactions, reflecting broad market participation but without the concentrated buying pressure needed to reverse the prevailing downtrend.

In terms of market valuation, the total market capitalization stood at Rs. 43.98 Kharba, with the float market capitalization, representing the value of freely tradable shares, recorded at Rs. 14.82 Kharba. These figures provide a snapshot of the overall size and liquidity of the Nepalese stock market, which continues to be a significant platform for capital formation and investment.

Individual stock performances offered a mixed picture. SHIVAM CEMENTS LTD (SHIVM) emerged as the leader in terms of turnover, recording transactions worth an impressive Rs. 21.75 crores. The company's stock closed at Rs. 650.00, indicating sustained investor interest despite the broader market's decline. On the other end of the spectrum, Sarvottam Paints Industries Limited (SAPIL) delivered an exceptional performance, hitting the upper circuit with a remarkable 15.00% gain, closing at Rs. 1,394.80. This surge highlights specific company-centric positive news or strong sectoral tailwinds driving investor confidence in particular segments.

Conversely, Upper Hewakhola Hydropower Company Limited (UHEWA) experienced the steepest decline, falling by 9.45% to close at Rs. 604.00. Such significant drops often reflect company-specific challenges, negative news, or a broader shift away from certain high-risk sectors during periods of market uncertainty.

Sectoral analysis revealed interesting divergences. The Manufacturing And Processing sector stood out as the top gainer, registering an impressive 1.74% increase. This robust performance, possibly bolstered by companies like Sarvottam Paints, suggests that investors might be rotating into sectors perceived as more resilient or offering better value propositions amidst the current market volatility. This could be driven by strong earnings reports, positive industry outlooks, or a shift towards consumer-oriented businesses. In stark contrast, the Mutual Fund sector recorded the highest loss, declining by 3.05%. This underperformance in mutual funds often reflects their diversified holdings, which tend to mirror the broader market sentiment, making them susceptible to widespread investor caution or redemptions during a sustained downtrend.

As the NEPSE index continues its losing streak, investors are advised to remain vigilant and conduct thorough due diligence. While the overall market sentiment appears subdued, the strong performance of specific sectors like Manufacturing and Processing indicates that opportunities still exist for discerning investors. Monitoring upcoming economic data, corporate announcements, and global market trends will be crucial for navigating the current market landscape and making informed investment decisions.
