NEPSE Rebounds After Three-Day Slump, Daily Turnover Sees Significant Boost
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index concluded the second trading day of the week on a positive note, breaking a three-day losing streak that had concerned investors. This modest rebound signals a potential shift in market sentiment, offering a glimmer of optimism after a period of decline. On Tuesday, the benchmark NEPSE index edged up by 0.79 points, closing at 2641.85. This slight uptick was mirrored across other key indices, with the Sensitive Index gaining 0.85 points, the Float Index rising by 0.17 points, and the Sensitive Float Index increasing by 0.30 points.
Crucially, the market also witnessed a significant surge in daily turnover, indicating renewed investor activity. Total transactions for the day amounted to NPR 4.11 billion, a notable increase from the NPR 3.67 billion recorded on Monday. This robust trading volume involved 9.534 million units of shares across 340 different stocks, executed through 52,073 transactions. The rise in both the index and turnover suggests a broader participation from investors, potentially driven by bargain hunting or a positive reaction to recent economic indicators.
Among the day's standout performers, Upper Lohore Khola Hydropower Company's shares captivated the market, hitting the positive circuit level. The company's stock price soared by NPR 56.90, closing at NPR 436.60, reflecting strong investor confidence in the hydropower sector. While other gaining stocks saw increases of less than 6 percent, this particular surge highlights the selective interest in high-potential companies. Conversely, Mahila Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha experienced the steepest decline, with its share price plummeting by 14.91 percent, underscoring the inherent volatility in certain segments of the market.
In terms of trading value, Solu Hydropower Company continued to dominate, securing the top spot with shares worth an impressive NPR 448.7 million changing hands. This consistent high turnover for Solu Hydropower suggests sustained investor interest and liquidity in the stock. Ridi Power Company also saw substantial activity, with its turnover exceeding NPR 335 million, while Ngadi Group Power recorded transactions worth approximately NPR 180 million. These figures indicate a strong focus on the energy sector, particularly hydropower, which often attracts significant capital in the Nepali market.
A deeper look into sectoral performance reveals a mixed bag, characteristic of a market in transition. Out of the 13 sub-indices, six managed to close in the green, offering support to the overall market. These included Banking, Hotels & Tourism, Hydropower, Investment, Life Insurance, and Others sub-groups, all registering modest gains. However, seven sub-indices experienced declines, indicating that the recovery is not uniform across all sectors. This divergence suggests that investors are becoming more discerning, channeling capital into sectors perceived to have stronger fundamentals or better growth prospects. The overall market sentiment, while cautiously optimistic, remains sensitive to both domestic and international economic developments, as well as regulatory changes. Investors are advised to conduct thorough research and consider market dynamics before making investment decisions.
