NEPSE's Weekly Retreat: A Technical Deep Dive into Market Consolidation

Rohan PoudelBy Rohan Poudel

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) concluded the past trading week with a notable decline, shedding approximately 1.79% or 49.06 points, to close at 2685.54. This dip follows a previous week where the index had closed at 2734.60. Out of the five trading days last week, the market experienced a downturn on four occasions, managing to register gains on only one day. This recent performance has prompted a closer look at the technical indicators to understand the market's current posture and potential future movements.

From a technical perspective, the NEPSE index appears to have entered a phase of consolidation following a pullback from its previous week's trendline breakout. This pullback suggests a period of profit-booking from higher levels, as investors took advantage of recent gains. However, the formation of a green candle on the final trading day of the week offers a glimmer of optimism, indicating that buyers remain active at lower price points. This pattern often signals the market's attempt to establish a new 'higher low,' a crucial development for sustaining an upward trend.

Looking ahead, several key resistance levels will be critical for NEPSE's trajectory. The 50-day and 100-day moving averages currently stand as significant hurdles. For the market to regain its strength and resume an upward momentum, it must decisively break above the 2706-point mark. Should NEPSE successfully breach this immediate resistance, the next significant challenge lies within the 2800 to 2860 range. Conversely, if the index continues its downward trajectory, strong support is anticipated in the 2550 to 2600 zone, which could act as a floor to prevent further significant declines.

An analysis of trading volume provides further insights into market sentiment. The daily trading volume last week remained below the 20-day average volume. This subdued volume during a period of market decline and subsequent attempt at recovery often indicates a reduction in selling pressure. Such a scenario suggests that sellers are becoming less aggressive, and the market might be transitioning into a 'sideways' or 'accumulation' mode. In an accumulation phase, smart money often quietly buys shares, anticipating a future upward movement.

Despite the recent dip, broader bullish momentum appears to be intact, as indicated by the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator. The MACD line continues to trade above the signal line, and both lines, along with the histogram, remain in the positive territory. This configuration typically suggests that the underlying bullish trend, which has been in play, is still holding strong, even amidst short-term corrections or consolidations.

Furthermore, the Stochastic Relative Strength Index (RSI) for NEPSE last week was observed in the neutral zone. A neutral Stochastic RSI implies a balance between buying and selling pressure in the market. This equilibrium supports the idea of a consolidation phase, where neither buyers nor sellers are dominating decisively, leading to price stability within a defined range.

In conclusion, while NEPSE experienced a retreat last week, a deeper technical analysis reveals a market in a state of consolidation rather than a full-blown reversal. The presence of active buyers at lower levels, coupled with decreasing selling pressure and sustained bullish momentum indicators, suggests that the market might be preparing for its next move. Investors should closely monitor the key resistance and support levels, as a decisive break in either direction could signal the market's next significant trend. As always, investors are advised to conduct their own thorough research and analysis before making any investment decisions, as this analysis is based on available data and technical indicators and is not exhaustive.
